SourceMedium vs Google Analytics 4
An evidence-backed comparison across integrations, attribution, data freshness, SQL access, pricing, and support.
| Feature | Google Analytics 4 | |
|---|---|---|
| Integrations & Data Sources | Commerce, ads, email, subscriptions, and ops, reconciled daily with 4,000+ automated quality checks | Web and app event tracking, Google ecosystem links, and BigQuery event export; not a maintained cross-system commerce model |
| Data Freshness | The maintained platform baseline is complete through the prior day. Some connectors support faster incremental updates. | Processing varies by reporting surface; streaming BigQuery export is available on standard properties |
| Attribution Models | No SourceMedium pixel is required. SourceMedium reconstructs observed purchase journeys from the tracking and first-party data sources already available. | Three primary property attribution settings: data-driven, paid and organic last click, and Google paid channels last click |
| Cohort / CLTV | Pre-built analytics modules including LTV, repurchase, retention, and new customer analysis | Cohort and User lifetime explorations include historical LTV and eligible predictive metrics |
| Dashboards & Visualization | Pre-built dashboards and forkable Looker Studio templates. Analytical answers can expose the underlying SQL. Documentation and methodology answers cite the governing sources. | Standard aggregated reports and configurable explorations; explorations can be sampled above standard limits |
| Custom Metrics | Define a metric once and use it across dashboards, SQL, and AI. | Custom metrics and events through the event schema; setup and governance remain the customer's responsibility |
| Data Access & Exports | Managed BigQuery foundation with included compute and direct query access to modeled tables | Daily and streaming BigQuery event exports are available on standard properties |
| Support & Success | Initial onboarding includes solution hours with a US-based Customer Solutions Engineer. Onboarding and ongoing platform support are included. | Self-service resources for standard properties; Analytics 360 offers enterprise-level technical support |

Why teams choose SourceMedium over Google Analytics 4
GA4 provides web and app analytics, attribution, configurable explorations, cohort and User lifetime analysis, and raw event exports to BigQuery. SourceMedium serves a different operating need: it connects commerce, advertising, lifecycle, subscription, finance, support, and operations data, then maintains the models, definitions, tests, and decision surfaces built on that foundation.
Standard GA4 is free and supports both daily and streaming BigQuery export. The practical tradeoff is that exported events are raw analytical inputs. A team still has to join them with commerce and operating systems, define business metrics, test the models, and maintain the resulting stack.
Where the approaches differ
Event analytics versus a maintained commerce foundation. GA4 measures web and app events and connects deeply with Google's advertising ecosystem. SourceMedium reconciles commerce, ads, lifecycle, subscriptions, finance, support, and operations into a governed foundation with a documented schema, 4,000+ automated quality checks running daily, and included BigQuery compute.
Reporting surfaces with different limits. GA4 standard reports commonly use aggregated tables, while explorations can be sampled above the standard event limit and privacy thresholds can withhold some data. Standard GA4 also supports daily and streaming BigQuery event exports. SourceMedium's distinction is not warehouse availability. It is the maintained cross-system model, governed definitions, and accountable operating support on top of BigQuery.
Retention with the correct boundary. GA4's event-level retention setting affects explorations and funnel reports, not standard aggregated reports. Raw events exported to BigQuery can remain available according to the customer's Google Cloud retention choices. SourceMedium adds supported-source backfill and maintained commerce models, subject to source API availability.
Raw event export versus decision-ready models. GA4 exports event tables. SourceMedium maintains order, customer, product, marketing, retention, finance, and attribution models that join GA4 context with the rest of the commerce stack.
Attribution with different source coverage. GA4's attribution models use the interactions GA4 observes. SourceMedium assigns credit across observed touchpoints available from connected systems and reconciles the result with governed order data. Coverage depends on available source data and identity signals, and gaps remain inspectable in BigQuery.
Software access versus an accountable operating partner. GA4 standard is free and GA4 360 uses negotiated pricing. SourceMedium charges for the integrated platform and the ongoing integration, modeling, reconciliation, testing, and support work. The proposal documents the platform fee, included usage, and potential overages before signing.
The portability stress test. GA4 can export raw events into the customer's BigQuery project. SourceMedium models connected business data in BigQuery with direct access and a customer-owned deployment option. Data already delivered remains available subject to the documented offboarding boundary.
Guided onboarding, included: For supported standard connectors, SourceMedium handles authorization guidance, historical backfill, modeling, reconciliation, testing, and dashboard setup. Your team grants access, confirms key definitions, and approves the validated outputs. Custom sources are scoped separately. Ongoing platform support is included.
Conversational analysis with different grounding. Ask Advisor in Google Analytics is a beta conversational experience for eligible English-language properties that can provide insights, visualizations, and links to reports. Google is also rolling out a broader cross-product Ask Advisor across Google Ads, Analytics, and Merchant Center. SourceMedium's AI Analyst works from the maintained cross-system commerce foundation. Analytical answers can expose their underlying SQL, while documentation and methodology answers cite governing sources.
When GA4 might be the better fit
GA4 is the right tool for web and app analytics, Google Ads measurement, traffic analysis, explorations, and raw event export. Most brands should keep GA4 for those jobs and use SourceMedium when they also need a maintained cross-system commerce foundation. The products solve different operating problems.
